Since the dawn of communication, signs have been used to help others know what is offered and by whom. In man’s earliest days of trade, often a “sign” could be little more than an arrowhead indicating a skilled “craftsman” from whom one could get an efficient tool. As man evolved, so did his signs. Romans had terra cotta and stone signs for various tradesmen and signs were even found among the ruins of Pompeii. Gradually over time, particularly in Europe, signs began to show more artistic interest. More paint and other embellishments were used to attract clients, much like today.
